BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:

At MSC, we’re dedicated to building the future of data-driven products through innovative solutions. As we expand our team, we’re seeking a Sr. R&D Engineer to join our Manufacturing Research & Technology team. In this role, you will serve as the spokesperson on advanced projects, act as a project lead for research initiatives, and provide input for new work/proposals in the area of expertise.

As a Sr. R&D Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our organizations manufacturing research and technology initiatives. Your role involves driving research initiatives in support of product development efforts across the organization. Beyond product development, you will participate in academic and industrial conferences through technical publication of fundamental and applied research projects.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as the subject-matter expert (SME) within area of expertise in machining dynamics and manufacturing technology.

  • Participate in and lead projects and research initiatives from conceptualization to production.

  • Lead research experiments and prototype development with the highest level of research methodology.

  • Facilitate the transition of research findings into tangible products or process improvements.

  • Participate in strategic product road mapping activities.

  • Prepare detailed reports, research papers, and technical documentation.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, data scientists, designers, and developers, to bring products from concept to market.

  • Engage with universities and research institutions as required.

  • Ensure new products function properly and meet specifications, cost targets, and timing plans.

  • Ensure that research efforts align with business objectives, market needs, and customer requirements.

  • Research and development conceptualization, analysis, and design, to stay up to date with the latest advances in manufacturing to identify new opportunities for product or service development. This involves creating technical specifications, creating prototypes, and using engineering tools and software to design and simulate proof-of-concept products or services.

  • Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose.

  • Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required.

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to manufacturing.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in research and development in at least one of the following areas: machining dynamics, machining, machine tools, sensor development, manufacturing technology)

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience using FEA software like Ansys, MATLAB, Abaqus, etc.

  • Proficiency in programming languages like Python, MATLAB, R, Java, or C/C++ for data analysis, scripting, or development of prototype applications.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling software such as Fusion 360, Inventor, SolidWorks, etc.

  • A proven track record of success in academic and/or industrial research work.

  • Familiarity with IoT integration, sensors, machine learning, and AI, and how these technologies can be applied to manufacturing settings.

    SKILLS:

  • Advanced-level experience and knowledge in applying advanced machining dynamics concepts to manufacturing processes.

  • Proficiency in manufacturing process optimization and using data insights for manufacturing process analysis.

  • Proficiency in CNC programming, CAD/CAM software, and simulation tools.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading and/or assisting with new product development projects including manufacturing trials, testing, measurements, and related documentation from initial tooling trials through production qualification.

  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and executing research topics or proposals.

  • Demonstrated leadership of project initiatives in both individual and cross-functional teams.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with proven ability to apply engineering knowledge and judgement to solve complex engineering problems.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to lead projects, manage multiple concurrent projects, and plan, prioritize, and document work.

  • Strong communication skills, with ability to work with multidisciplinary project teams and interact with people of different skillsets, job functions, and abilities.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel up to 25% of the time may be required.

  • This position may require access to International Traffic in Arms Regulations Information (“ITAR”) and/or Controlled Unclassified Information (“CUI”).

    Compensation starting at $82390 - $129470 depending on experience.

    The salary range represented is based on similar roles in comparable industries, and the cost of labor in respective cities. Actual compensation is based on the candidate’s relevant experience, education requirements and peer pay equity. The Company reserves the right to modify the range as market conditions change.
